Salt Springers collaborating under the Positively Forward banner have been advocating for an elected CRD Local Community Commission (LCC) since 2018. In the October 2022 referendum islanders agreed with us, voting to establish an elected LCC by a clear majority of 61%
The creation of the elected Local Community Commission (LCC) is perhaps the biggest change to Salt Spring’s local governance since the Islands Trust was established in 1974.
On May 27th, 2023, in a special local election, islanders will elect the first four Local Commissioners to join re-elected Salt Spring CRD Director Gary Holman on the new LCC.
After May 27th, decisions about most of Salt Spring’s local CRD services, facilities, and budgets previously made by CRD staff and the Salt Spring CRD Director will be made by the elected LCC. The extent of the LCC’s initial responsibility is indicated by the size of the associated budget, well over $9 million in 2022.
The first four Commissioners will establish how the LCC will operate and will set the stage for years to come. Electing suitable candidates for this task is critical.
Positively Forward has consulted past and current Advisory Commission members, and others familiar with the workings of local government, for guidance on the skills and experience that the first four Commissioners will need. This advice has helped Positively Forward develop assessment criteria that can help voters determine which candidates are best suited for the task.
